The vast expanse of our oceans is home to complex traps designed for catching fish, including nets, hooks, and fishing lines. While these tools are intended to harvest seafood, they often inadvertently ensnare other marine species. This unintended capture, known as bycatch, results in the deaths of millions of marine animals each year, encompassing whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles, and seabirds. Bycatch poses a significant threat, as entangled wildlife can suffer fatal injuries or asphyxiation. Even if these animals are released back into the sea, many do not survive the ordeal. Moreover, bycatch creates challenges for fishermen, as entangled creatures can damage equipment, leading to financial losses and tarnishing the reputation of fisheries. Over the years, conservationists, researchers, and fishermen have collaborated to develop various strategies for reducing bycatch across different fishing practices globally. However, implementing these solutions effectively remains a considerable hurdle, and many promising strategies have not been widely adopted. Recent studies have introduced innovative solutions, such as nets equipped with LED lights and low-tech methods like using plastic water bottles to reduce certain types of bycatch. These advancements offer hope to both marine life and the fishing industry, as they appear practical for fishermen to incorporate. Marine biologist Matthew Savoca from Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station expresses optimism about the future: "There are not very many conservation issues where industry, conservationists, consumers, and fishermen all align. Everyone desires to reduce bycatch." The challenge of bycatch is an inherent conflict in fishing practices, as marine scientist Nancy Knowlton points out. "If you design a system to catch animals, it’s inevitable that you will also capture unintended species."
