Ambitious plan to store CO2 beneath the North Sea set to start operations

In a groundbreaking move to combat climate change, the Nini oil field, located in the North Sea, is poised to transform from a fossil fuel extraction site into a critical carbon storage facility. The project, spearheaded by chemical giant INEOS, aims to inject liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) into depleted oil reservoirs situated 1,800 meters beneath the seabed. As part of the Greensand Future initiative, this innovative carbon capture and storage (CCS) project is expected to commence commercial operations next year, potentially becoming the first fully operational offshore CO2 storage site in the European Union. During a recent visit to the Siri platform, close to the Nini field, INEOS leaders outlined their ambitious plans to initially store 400,000 tons of CO2 annually, with a goal to ramp up to 8 million tons by 2030. Mads Gade, CEO of INEOS Energy Europe, emphasized Denmark’s capacity to significantly contribute to carbon storage, stating, "Denmark has the potential to actually store more than several hundred years of our own emissions." The project has also secured partnerships with local biogas facilities to facilitate the burial of captured carbon emissions in the Nini field. A CO2 terminal is currently under construction at the Port of Esbjerg, designed to temporarily hold the liquefied gas before it is transported. A specialized vessel, named "Carbon Destroyer 1," is being built in the Netherlands to assist in this crucial operation. Proponents of CCS highlight its potential as a vital solution for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, citing support from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which recognizes this technology as a key tool in the fight against global warming. The EU has set an ambitious target of developing at least 250 million tons of CO2 storage capacity annually by 2040 to help achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Gade reaffirmed the importance of CCS in reducing emissions without leading to deindustrialization, stating, "We want to have actually a few instruments to decarbonize instead." Experts from Denmark’s geological survey have indicated that the sandstone formations in the Greensand project area are exceptionally suited for CO2 storage, with one-third of the rock's volume containing tiny cavities. Senior researcher Niels Schovsbo noted that there are no adverse reactions between the reservoir and injected CO2, indicating a safe environment for long-term storage. Despite the promise of CCS technology, environmental advocates caution that it should not become a substitute for necessary emission reductions. Helene Hagel from Greenpeace Denmark articulated concerns that CCS is often used by industries as an excuse to postpone genuine emission cuts. As INEOS moves forward with its carbon storage efforts, the company is also eyeing potential developments in other North Sea oil fields, emphasizing a transition towards more sustainable energy practices while balancing regional energy needs. This ambitious project reflects a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against climate change, but its success will depend on the commitment to both capture and significantly reduce emissions across all sectors.
