Man jailed for a month despite Flock showing he was 5 miles from crime scene

A legal battle is brewing against the San Diego police department following the wrongful imprisonment of a man for a month, primarily based on misleading evidence from a Flock camera alert. In an incident that occurred last November, Hugo Parra was arrested on felony charges after law enforcement relied on Flock data and a witness statement that inaccurately linked him to an attempted carjacking at gunpoint. Authorities were on the lookout for a red Alfa Romeo with tinted windows, along with a suspect wearing a gray hoodie. However, Parra was merely a passenger in a friend's vehicle and was dressed in a white hoodie, which only vaguely resembled the description provided. Although Flock cameras are capable of capturing license plate information, the police did not possess even a partial plate number to substantiate their claims that the vehicle was involved in the violent crime. In a shocking twist, the Flock data indicated that Parra was actually five miles away from the crime scene when the incident occurred. Parra’s attorney, Alex Coolman, highlighted that law enforcement could have easily verified his client's alibi using this data, alongside his cellphone location information, to prove his innocence. Coolman emphasized, "This Flock hit was obviously the wrong car, as it could not have been in both places simultaneously." Despite the evidence pointing to Parra's innocence, police overlooked the critical data that contradicted their theory. They proceeded to present a lineup to a witness, who identified Parra based merely on superficial traits such as his jacket, beard, and skin color, rather than any substantive evidence linking him to the crime. This wrongful arrest has raised serious questions about the reliability of surveillance technology and the decision-making processes within law enforcement.
