Infosys headcount falls by over 8,400 in Q4, workforce at 328,594

Infosys, the prominent IT services firm based in Bengaluru, has reported a significant reduction in its workforce, shedding over 8,400 employees in the March quarter of 2026. This strategic move comes as the company adjusts its hiring practices in response to a decline in demand and emphasizes productivity enhancements. By the end of March 2026, Infosys's total employee count stood at 328,594, a decrease from 337,034 in the preceding December quarter. Despite the downsizing, the company managed to increase its headcount by approximately 5,000 employees compared to the previous year, when it had 323,578 employees. The trend reflects a broader shift within India's IT sector, where companies are moving away from aggressive hiring following the pandemic. Firms are now focusing on improved workforce management, automation, and efficiencies driven by artificial intelligence. Infosys maintained a high utilization rate, with 83% of its workforce (excluding trainees) effectively engaged in projects during the March quarter, signaling better resource deployment and reduced underutilization. However, there was a slight increase in attrition rates, with voluntary departures rising to 12.6% from the previous quarter's 12.3%. This figure is still notably lower than the 14.1% reported in the same quarter last year. In comparison, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services company, saw its workforce grow by a net of 2,356 employees, reaching a total of 584,519 by the end of Q4 FY26. Wipro's headcount reflected a cautious approach, with only a slight increase of 135 employees, bringing its total to 242,156, up from 242,021 in December. Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra's workforce experienced a drop of nearly 2,000 employees, with a total of 147,623 by the end of March 2026, down from 149,616 in the previous quarter. In its Q4 results, Infosys showcased robust financial performance, reporting a 20.87% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit, amounting to Rs 8,501 crore compared to Rs 7,033 crore in the same quarter last year. Revenue from operations for the quarter rose by 13.38% year-on-year, hitting Rs 46,402 crore, up from Rs 40,925 crore a year earlier. However, total expenses also climbed by 13.28%, reaching Rs 36,764 crore, compared to Rs 32,452 crore in the same period last year.
