In a decisive move, Indonesian authorities announced on Saturday that they are temporarily restricting access to xAI's chatbot Grok. This action represents one of the most significant governmental responses to the alarming rise of sexualized, AI-generated imagery circulating online, which frequently features real individuals and minors, often in distressing scenarios. Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "The government views the practice of non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the security of citizens in the digital space." In a bid to address the issue, officials have also summoned representatives from X, the social network linked to xAI. The controversy surrounding Grok has sparked varied reactions from governments worldwide. For instance, India's IT ministry has directed xAI to implement measures to prevent the generation of obscene content. Meanwhile, the European Commission has requested that the company preserve all documents related to Grok, potentially paving the way for an investigation. In the UK, communications regulator Ofcom has announced plans to conduct a rapid assessment to identify any compliance issues that might necessitate further investigation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed his full support for Ofcom's actions. Conversely, the U.S. government has remained relatively quiet on this matter, despite calls from Democratic senators urging Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores. In a previous response, xAI acknowledged a violation of ethical standards regarding child sexual abuse material and subsequently limited the AI image-generation feature to paying subscribers. However, this restriction did not extend to the Grok app, which continues to allow the generation of images for all users. In light of criticisms about governmental inaction against other AI image generation platforms, Elon Musk commented, "They want any excuse for censorship."
