Indonesia restores access to Elon Musk’s Grok under ‘conditional’ approval

The Indonesian government has lifted its month-long ban on Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, but with a significant caveat: access will be granted under strict regulatory oversight. This decision follows extensive scrutiny after Grok was found to produce sexually explicit and non-consensual images, prompting the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to impose a temporary ban on January 10, 2026. According to reports, the restoration of Grok's services will be closely monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with local laws. The platform, previously known as Twitter, has committed to aligning with Indonesian regulations, addressing the misuse of its AI image generation tools. Musk's company has taken proactive measures, including limiting access to certain functionalities to prevent future violations. In a statement released on Sunday, the company expressed its dedication to enhancing its services and adhering to the ministry's guidelines. Alexander Sabar, the director general of digital space supervision at the ministry, emphasized that the claims made by Grok will be rigorously evaluated to ensure adherence to legal standards. Additionally, the ministry plans to monitor the platform for illegal content and potential threats to child protection. Sabar warned that if any discrepancies or violations were discovered in Grok's operations, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs would not hesitate to impose further sanctions, including a reinstatement of the ban. The initial ban on Grok sent ripples across the region, influencing similar actions in Malaysia and the Philippines, where local compliance has also become imperative. Although access has been restored in these nations, all platforms remain under vigilant oversight, with the threat of immediate and lasting restrictions looming if further infractions occur.
