In a significant development, Indonesia has lifted its suspension on TikTok's local operating license after the platform complied with a government request for data. This decision comes after TikTok provided information regarding its Live feature's traffic and monetization activities from August 25 to August 30, as confirmed by Alexander Sabar, a director general at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. Sabar stated that the ministry has concluded the license suspension as TikTok has met the stipulated obligations. The data was submitted in a letter dated October 3, coinciding with the initial announcement of the suspension due to alleged violations of regulations governing private electronic system operators. The suspension stemmed from TikTok's previous reluctance to share comprehensive details about user engagement amid protests that erupted following the death of a delivery driver during late August. TikTok had initially informed the ministry that internal policies limited its ability to fully meet the data request, resulting in only partial information being provided. On August 30, as protests intensified, TikTok temporarily halted its live streaming service but resumed it shortly thereafter when the situation calmed. This incident underscores the increasing regulatory scrutiny faced by the platform in Indonesia, a key market for TikTok's expansion in Southeast Asia, particularly in areas such as user engagement and e-commerce. Indonesia has emerged as a major contributor to TikTok Shop's global sales value, highlighting the importance of the region for the platform's business strategy.
