Indonesia ‘conditionally’ lifts ban on Grok

Indonesia has made the decision to lift its ban on the AI chatbot Grok, following similar actions taken by Malaysia and the Philippines. This move comes after the Southeast Asian nations previously prohibited Grok due to its involvement in the creation of a significant number of non-consensual, sexualized images on the platform X, which is now a subsidiary of xAI. Reports indicate that Grok was responsible for generating at least 1.8 million sexualized images featuring women and minors during late December and January, as detailed by analyses from The New York Times and the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced that the ban would be lifted under specific conditions, citing a letter from X that outlined measures aimed at improving the service and preventing future misuse. Alexander Sabar, the ministry’s director general of digital space monitoring, emphasized that the ban could be reinstated should any additional violations occur. Both Malaysia and the Philippines lifted their bans on January 23. The controversial deepfake technology associated with Grok has drawn scrutiny from governments worldwide, leading to some investigations but only a limited number of outright bans. In the United States, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has initiated an investigation into xAI and issued a cease-and-desist order demanding immediate action to halt the production of such images. In response to the backlash, xAI has reportedly implemented certain restrictions on Grok’s capabilities, including limiting its AI image generation feature to paying subscribers on X. CEO Elon Musk has stated that individuals using Grok to produce illegal content will face consequences comparable to those who upload illegal material. He has also claimed to be unaware of any underage naked images generated by Grok. In a related note, recently released documents from the Justice Department regarding the infamous sex offender Jeffrey Epstein revealed multiple emails exchanged between Musk and Epstein in 2012 and 2013. These communications included Musk expressing interest in visiting Epstein’s Caribbean island. Epstein had previously pleaded guilty to procuring an underage girl for prostitution in 2008. Meanwhile, xAI is reportedly in discussions to merge with Musk's other ventures, SpaceX and Tesla, ahead of a potential SpaceX IPO.
