Indonesia urges TikTok, Meta to act against harmful online content

In a decisive move to tackle the surge of online disinformation, Indonesia has called on representatives from Meta Platforms Inc. and ByteDance's TikTok, along with other social media platforms, to enhance their content moderation efforts. This initiative comes as the spread of false information, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, has ignited public outrage and triggered protests against the government. Deputy Communications Minister Angga Raka Prabowo emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the government expects these platforms to proactively remove harmful content related to disinformation, pornography, and online gambling without waiting for formal requests. "They must comply with the rules because our goal is to protect this country," Prabowo asserted. He outlined potential penalties for non-compliance, which could include reprimands, fines, temporary suspensions, or even removal from the list of registered electronic platforms. The minister highlighted the chaos caused by disinformation, which prevents the public from accessing accurate and complete information. To address these concerns, separate meetings with TikTok and Meta are scheduled for later this week. Additionally, invitations will be extended to Elon Musk's X and YouTube Indonesia to discuss further collaboration. Both TikTok and Instagram boast over 100 million accounts in Indonesia, making them significant players in the region. Instances of misinformation have included deep fake videos misrepresenting statements by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and misleading footage of past protests being circulated as recent events. The situation escalated recently when hundreds of protesters clashed with police, with reports indicating that some detained individuals were influenced by TikTok videos promoting demonstrations. The Child Protection Commission noted that several youths involved in the protest were under 18 years old, highlighting the far-reaching impact of social media on public actions.
