Indias approach to AI regulation is pro-innovation: IndiaAI CEO

In a significant address on June 3, Abhishek Singh, CEO of IndiaAI and Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), outlined India's commitment to fostering an innovative and responsible AI landscape. Speaking during the final Stakeholder Consultation on the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), Singh emphasized that the nation’s regulatory framework is designed to encourage innovation while ensuring user safety. "Our strategy is to create AI solutions that not only work for India but also positively impact the daily lives of its citizens," he stated. He elaborated on the extensive consultations conducted in various cities, including Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, aimed at customizing the UNESCO-developed readiness assessment to fit India's unique AI environment. Singh highlighted the importance of developing inclusive and ethical AI solutions, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and agriculture. "While we have the technical capabilities, such as high-end computing and language APIs, it is essential that our solutions are fair and address genuine needs," he said. He also acknowledged the growth of investments in AI computing and the work of Indian startups on foundational AI models. However, Singh insisted that the focus must transition from mere discussions to actionable steps that promote responsible AI usage. He noted ongoing efforts to create tools that detect bias, identify deep fakes, and watermark AI-generated content, reinforcing India's dedication to ethical AI development.
