India explores Alipay+ integration for cross-border payments

The Indian government, alongside the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), is currently engaged in discussions with Ant International to integrate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Alipay+ network. This potential partnership aims to enhance India's instant payment capabilities, enabling users to make purchases from international merchants using familiar UPI applications like Google Pay. As of now, there has been no official announcement from the RBI, the finance ministry, or the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regarding the Alipay+ integration. Additionally, Ant International, which operates Alipay+, has also remained silent on the matter, leaving the details of this expansion largely speculative. If the integration materializes, it could revolutionize the way Indian tourists transact abroad. They would no longer need to rely on foreign currency cards or local SIM-linked wallets, allowing for easy payments across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe through their preferred UPI apps. Alipay boasts an impressive user base of over 1.8 billion and features more than 150 million merchants on its platform. In contrast, India's UPI system currently operates in select regions like Singapore, the UAE, France, and Sri Lanka via bilateral agreements. According to NPCI data, UPI achieved a staggering 18.92 billion transactions as of January 2026, with an average daily transaction volume reaching 700.8 million. In financial terms, UPI transactions totaled ₹24.39 lakh crore during the same period.
