Union Budget bets on ‘Education to Employment and Enterprise’ model as edtech sees AI-Led skills boom

India's Union Budget for 2026 has unveiled an ambitious strategy centered on the 'Education to Employment and Enterprise' (EEE) model. This innovative framework aims to enhance collaboration between educational institutions and the job market, reflecting a significant shift in how education is perceived and delivered. With a firm commitment to aligning educational outcomes with industry demands, the government plans to establish 15,000 Content Creator Labs and 1,000 specialized AI hubs. Prateek Maheshwari, Co-Founder of PhysicsWallah, emphasized the necessity of this approach, stating that the education sector, particularly in creative digital media, will require millions of skilled professionals. He believes that India is moving away from traditional rote learning to a more skill-based education system, effectively preparing students for future challenges right from the classroom. Maheshwari also expressed support for the lowered 2% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on foreign education for students studying abroad, but raised concerns regarding the taxation of educational services within India. He highlighted that making education affordable is crucial to democratizing access for all. Arpit Mittal, Founder and CEO of SpeakX.ai, commended the establishment of the education to employment standing committee, noting its potential to align educational outcomes with market needs. He pointed out that the integration of the Bhashini AI ecosystem into the EEE model could enhance personalized learning experiences, particularly in regional language coaching. Pankaj Jathar, CEO of NIIT Ltd, remarked that the 2026 budget highlights a pivotal moment for India, where economic growth and global competitiveness hinge on effective skills development. He noted the emphasis on AI-led initiatives and the target to build capacity for around 250 million individuals. Jathar stressed the importance of quickly executing these plans to ensure widespread benefits, urging that India must enhance its focus on large-scale, industry-aligned skilling initiatives integrating AI and emerging technologies. This, he believes, will empower every sector to play a meaningful role in the country’s evolution towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
