Budget 2026: 15,000 schools, 500 colleges to get 'Content Creator Labs' to boost Orange Economy: FM Sitharaman

In her speech regarding the Union Budget 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the Indian government's dedication to advancing the nation's vibrant creative sector. She pointed out that the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) industry is not only flourishing but is also expected to demand 2 million professionals by the year 2030. To address this need, she proposed the establishment of AVGC Content Creator Labs at 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai. This initiative marks a significant milestone for what is being termed India's 'Orange Economy', which refers to the economic potential derived from creative industries. This sector includes various fields where creativity, skill, and talent are pivotal to producing goods and services. Beyond its economic implications, the Orange Economy promotes innovation, cultural expression, and social unity, encompassing a wide range of activities from performing arts to visual arts, music, publishing, and fashion. With a growing young population, increased digital access, and a rich cultural backdrop, India is well-positioned to foster creative endeavors. The AVGC sector, in particular, has emerged as a stronghold in this landscape. India is not only a major consumer of gaming and animated content but has also established itself as a global hub for animation and VFX outsourcing, catering to international markets. The Finance Minister’s announcement aims to tackle a pressing issue within this evolving economy: the skills gap. By launching AVGC Content Creator Labs across numerous educational institutions, the government intends to cultivate a skilled workforce that can fulfill the anticipated demand for professionals in the coming years. This foundational investment in creative education is designed to widen access to high-growth fields, encouraging talent from various backgrounds and regions. The emphasis on the AVGC sector in the Union Budget 2026 is a clear acknowledgment of the Orange Economy's potential to significantly contribute to India's GDP and job creation. By prioritizing and investing in creativity, India is positioning itself as a leader in the global creative landscape, paving the way for a new generation of content creators and solidifying its status on the world stage.
