Pixxel-led consortium signs pact with IN-SPACe to build India’s first private national Earth-observation constellation

In a groundbreaking development for India's space sector, Bengaluru-based startup Pixxel has forged a partnership with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to establish the country's first privately-operated national Earth Observation (EO) constellation. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it transitions the responsibility of satellite systems from government to private sector-led operations. Pixxel will spearhead a consortium that includes three other Indian space firms: Dhruva Space, PierSight, and SatSure. Together, they plan to invest over Rs 1,200 crore in a five-year endeavor to create a constellation of 12 satellites. According to Pixxel, this agreement signifies a pivotal moment in the evolution of India’s space industry, representing one of the largest public-private partnerships in the nation's space history. The consortium's ambitious project aims to integrate advanced technologies, featuring very high-resolution optical, multispectral, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and hyperspectral imaging capabilities. The data gathered will primarily serve Indian government users, coordinated through IN-SPACe, while also opening avenues for global commercialization in various sectors, including agriculture, environment, infrastructure, energy, and maritime. Awais Ahmed, founder and CEO of Pixxel, emphasized that this venture reflects a strategic shift in India's aspirations for space exploration and intelligence. "This is a powerful declaration of India’s intent in space," he remarked, highlighting the importance of having a domestically controlled Earth intelligence infrastructure shaped by Indian companies. Ahmed further noted that this project not only showcases the potential of India's private space ecosystem but also reinforces the government's confidence in its capabilities. He described the collaboration as a representation of the new space economy—characterized by the agility and innovation of the private sector, now being deployed on a national scale.
