During the Semicon India 2025 summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the critical role that semiconductors play in the modern economy. He described chips as the 'digital diamonds' of the 21st century, stating, 'We are prepared to welcome all investors. Soon, the world will recognize products designed and made in India, trusted globally.' Modi emphasized that while the last century revolved around oil, the future hinges on the capabilities of small semiconductor chips. 'These chips have the potential to propel global development,' he asserted during his speech. The event also featured Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who introduced the Vikram 32-bit processor and showcased test chips from four sanctioned projects to the Prime Minister. Vaishnaw remarked on the rapid advancements made within a mere 3.5 years, highlighting the confidence investors have in India's semiconductor ambitions. 'Today, we are witnessing the construction of five semiconductor facilities at a vigorous pace,' he noted, adding that they had just presented the first 'Made-in-India' chip to PM Modi. The Prime Minister further declared that the world is ready to collaborate with India on its semiconductor future, stating, 'I am here with the assurance that the world trusts India and is prepared to build this future with us.' He pointed out the nation's transition from backend manufacturing to becoming a complete semiconductor powerhouse. Modi expressed optimism about India's trajectory, saying, 'The day is near when India's smallest chip will bring about significant global change. We may have started this journey late, but we cannot be stopped now.' He also highlighted the progress made under the Semicon India initiative, noting the approval of India's first semiconductor plant in 2023, followed by more approvals in subsequent years. With an investment exceeding ₹1.5 lakh crore allocated across ten semiconductor projects, Modi illustrated the growing trust international investors have in India's capabilities. He mentioned the implementation of the National Single Window System, streamlining approvals and alleviating bureaucratic burdens for investors. Semicon India 2025 is a three-day event taking place at the Yashobhoomi India International Convention Center, focusing on establishing a robust, resilient, and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in India.
