India eyes global quantum computer push — and QpiAI is its chosen vehicle

QpiAI, an innovative startup from India, has successfully raised $32 million in a funding round that has garnered support from the Indian government. This investment is aimed at expanding the company's reach and advancing the development of large-scale quantum computers for global markets. The funding round, which is entirely in equity, was co-led by the Indian government's ambitious $750 million National Quantum Mission and Avataar Ventures, resulting in a post-money valuation of $162 million for QpiAI. This major financial backing highlights India's commitment to establishing itself as a key player in the quantum computing arena. Launched in 2023, the National Quantum Mission is an initiative designed to harness the potential of quantum computing not only as a significant economic opportunity but also as a crucial element of national security. The program aims to create intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50–1,000 physical qubits over the next eight years, utilizing various platforms such as superconducting and photonics technology. Furthermore, it seeks to enhance satellite-based quantum communications and develop advanced quantum networks and materials. QpiAI is among eight startups chosen under the National Quantum Mission, each receiving initial grants of up to $3.5 million. Based in Bengaluru, QpiAI has already made strides by launching India's first full-stack quantum computer, known as QpiAI-Indus, which features 25 superconducting qubits. The startup integrates AI and quantum computing to optimize processes in diverse sectors, including manufacturing, finance, and pharmaceuticals. In an interview, QpiAI’s founder and CEO, Nagendra Nagaraja, emphasized the synergy between AI and quantum technologies, stating, “Quantum can really make sure AI is robust.” He identified critical applications such as simulation, drug synthesis, and material discovery, where the fusion of AI and quantum computing could yield significant advantages. Looking ahead, QpiAI is set to introduce its 64-qubit quantum computer in November, with customer availability anticipated by mid-2024. The company is also planning to establish local manufacturing operations by 2026, currently producing 80% of its machines in-house. With a dedicated team of 100 employees, including 25 PhDs, QpiAI has established a strong foothold, serving around 20 clients in India and the U.S., including government agencies that rely on its infrastructure for algorithm testing. The startup has reported profitability at the EBITDA level for the past three years, boasting around 60% gross margins. The new funding will enable QpiAI to target markets in Singapore and the Middle East, as well as support its local manufacturing ambitions and the development of a 100-logical qubit system by 2030. Previously, in June 2022, QpiAI raised $6.5 million in pre-Series A funding, setting the stage for its current growth trajectory. The National Quantum Mission's support extends to other startups as well, fostering a collaborative environment aimed at positioning India as a leader in quantum technologies. Ajai Chowdhry, chairman of the National Quantum Mission, reaffirmed this commitment, stating, “We plan to continue to support home-grown product companies like QpiAI to help them expand into large enterprises.”
