India AI Impact Summit 2026: India to reach full-stack sovereignty in 3-5 yrs, says MeitY’s Abhishek Singh

At the forefront of global AI advancements, India is rapidly progressing towards establishing its own sovereign AI infrastructure. This was the key message delivered by Abhishek Singh from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) during the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Singh projected that the nation is on track to achieve complete sovereignty over its AI capabilities within the next 3 to 5 years. In his address at the session titled 'Scaling Impact from India's Sovereign AI and Data', Singh emphasized the importance of having control across all layers of the AI stack. He stated, “With the right investments, policy frameworks, and collaborations with local enterprises, we are poised to attain comprehensive sovereign control over our AI landscape.” Singh further elaborated on the necessity of creating AI systems that address real-world challenges beyond the digital realm. He argued for the development of an India-centric approach that enhances productivity and boosts income levels. “Utilizing AI to tackle critical issues in sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture can empower communities. Ensuring that healthcare services reach every individual, including those in remote areas, embodies true sovereignty,” he remarked. As the summit continues into its second day, attendees can look forward to a series of discussions focused on furthering India’s sovereign AI initiatives.
