Meity working with stakeholders on mobile security; assures to address industrys legitimate concerns

In a significant move to enhance mobile security, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has initiated ongoing consultations with key stakeholders in the industry. This effort aims to address legitimate concerns regarding mobile safety and to develop a robust regulatory framework, as stated in an official announcement on Sunday. With smartphones increasingly central to financial transactions, public service delivery, and the storage of sensitive personal data, the ministry emphasizes that mobile security is paramount. Cybercriminals view these devices as prime targets, and any security lapses could result in identity theft, financial loss, and privacy breaches. Meity has established a structured consultation process to engage with industry representatives, focusing on understanding the technical challenges and compliance burdens faced by smartphone manufacturers. The ministry is committed to considering all legitimate concerns raised by the industry to serve the best interests of both the country and the sector. The IT ministry highlights that unsecured mobile devices present considerable risks, including data breaches that can disrupt business operations. As the digital landscape evolves, the government is dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity measures and protecting users' personal information. Regular consultations conducted by Meity touch upon various aspects of mobile technology, including safety compliance, electromagnetic interference, and security standards. The ministry reassures the industry of its commitment to transparency and collaboration in addressing concerns related to technical compliance and adhering to international best practices. Additionally, discussions on safety standards for mobile phones and communication devices have shifted from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to Meity. This transition aims to ensure that safety standards align with the Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements (ITSAR), which cover critical areas such as software updates and source code management for communication devices. The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), representing major companies like Apple and Xiaomi, supports this consultative approach. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo stated that the discussions are a routine part of the government's engagement with the industry and reflect a transparent and open consultation process. The organization views these interactions as a standard practice and is optimistic about the progress being made in ensuring mobile safety standards.
