Sarvam AI and Pixxel partner to set up India’s first orbital data centre satellite

In a significant milestone for India's space capabilities, Pixxel, a company specializing in planetary intelligence, has announced plans to create the nation's first orbital data center satellite, powered by Sarvam AI. This partnership aims to design, construct, launch, and operate the innovative Pathfinder satellite, set to revolutionize how data is processed in space. The Pathfinder satellite will be equipped with cutting-edge AI technology from Sarvam, enabling it to run sophisticated AI models and tasks directly in orbit. Weighing approximately 200 kilograms, this satellite is slated for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, marking a pivotal moment in space technology for India. What sets the Pathfinder apart is its ability to process data in space rather than transmitting large volumes of raw imagery back to Earth. Equipped with a low-power edge processor and advanced GPUs akin to those found in modern AI data centers, the satellite will harness Pixxel's flagship hyperspectral imaging camera. This technology will allow for real-time pattern recognition, change detection, and insight generation, enhancing decision-making capabilities in critical areas like climate monitoring, disaster response, agriculture, resource management, and infrastructure oversight. The satellite will be developed at Pixxel’s upcoming Gigapixxel facility, which is designed to scale production to 100 units and support the deployment of next-generation space infrastructure from India. This initiative underscores Sarvam AI's commitment to expanding its homegrown AI technology into the space sector. By running its AI models directly on the satellite's GPU rather than relying on foreign cloud services, Sarvam aims to strengthen India's intelligence infrastructure. Pratyush Kumar, CEO of Sarvam, expressed enthusiasm about this venture, stating, "Having India-built models running in orbit aboard an India-built satellite is exactly the kind of foundational capability that the country needs.
