“We need something far more versatile…”: Nirmala Sitharaman flags Anthropic Mythos AI as new risk to banks

On April 23, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman convened a critical security meeting with Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with banking leaders and key stakeholders. The discussion focused on the cybersecurity threats posed by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, particularly the newly unveiled Anthropic Claude Mythos. Sitharaman's warnings, shared via a post from the Ministry of Finance, underscored the unprecedented nature of the risks associated with emerging AI technologies. She stressed the need for heightened vigilance, preparedness, and improved coordination among financial institutions to effectively mitigate these threats. During the meeting, while acknowledging the commendable efforts already made by banks to address cybersecurity issues, Sitharaman pointed out that new challenges are arising from AI advancements. "The new challenge, which is coming in the name of Mythos, about which not much is known, not very many people have tested or tried," she stated, reflecting concerns over the limited understanding and testing of this technology. The Finance Minister also mentioned that her ministry is engaged in discussions with global tech companies and governments to reinforce India’s defenses against these emerging threats. She emphasized that existing measures might not suffice, advocating for innovative and adaptable strategies to counteract potential risks. Sitharaman urged banks to collaborate on identifying necessary investments, relevant technologies, and innovative solutions that AI itself could provide to combat its associated challenges. The Ministry's post further encouraged banks to promptly report any suspicious activities or cyber incidents to the appropriate authorities while implementing preemptive measures to secure their IT systems, protect customer data, and safeguard financial resources.
