India is a power-ready hub for data centre expansion, says Vertiv India executive

Vertiv, a leading provider of critical infrastructure solutions, has identified India as a prime candidate for data centre growth, particularly as the nation positions itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence. Subhasis Majumdar, Managing Director of Vertiv India, emphasized the country’s significant advantage in power availability, stating, "India is in a very good position in terms of power, and that is why it will facilitate data centre growth in India." He further highlighted the rapid development of renewable energy sources in the country, noting, "Renewables are also a big factor. Solar and wind power have seen a significant ramp-up in capacity. India is very well positioned in that aspect." While power constraints pose a universal challenge for data centres, Majumdar expressed confidence that India can mitigate these issues through strategic geographic distribution. He remarked, "If you spread your data centre infrastructure across the country, I don't see that being a major challenge." As a key player in building the necessary infrastructure, Vertiv is heavily invested in the expansion of data centres across India. The company provides essential power management, cooling, and other systems vital for operational efficiency. Majumdar stated, "We are very focused on the results. We have a major presence in India, both in terms of engineering and manufacturing." He also assured that the same level of technology available in the United States is accessible in India. Vertiv is committed to becoming a long-term partner in India's AI infrastructure evolution, with Majumdar asserting, "We are very well positioned and equipped to serve this adoption of AI workload in India." In addressing the evolving demands of AI workloads, Majumdar noted that traditional data centre racks, which typically handled 10–15 kW, are now being pushed to exceed 100 kW. He indicated that future systems may even approach megawatt-scale capacities as AI infrastructure continues to scale up, fundamentally altering the design and cooling approaches of data centres. To tackle energy consumption effectively, Vertiv is investing in liquid cooling technologies, which Majumdar believes are critical to enhancing efficiency. He explained, "Liquid cooling technology is key to grinding the energy consumption down. It can help reduce the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which is the measurement for energy consumption in the data centre, and that will go down with liquid cooling technology." Additionally, Vertiv is implementing various monitoring and optimization tools to predict and decrease overall energy usage. Majumdar concluded, "If you optimize the flow of liquid into a chip, through all these mechanisms, you will be able to optimize the overall consumption." He further mentioned that the company is actively investing in manufacturing and engineering capabilities to meet the growing demand in the data centre sector.
