India adopts techno legal approach for AI safety: Vaishnaw

In a significant move towards advancing artificial intelligence, India's Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the nation's commitment to a techno-legal framework for AI safety. Speaking in New Delhi, Vaishnaw emphasized that the government's focus is on fostering innovation rather than imposing strict regulations. "Our approach to AI safety is distinctly different from that of many countries, which often view it primarily as a legal challenge that requires new legislation," he stated. Instead of creating laws as the first step, India is establishing a network of institutions dedicated to addressing specific challenges in AI safety. During the launch of two pivotal initiatives—the 'AI for Viksit Bharat Roadmap' and the 'NITI Frontier Tech Repository'—the minister reiterated that the government's inclination leans more towards promoting technological innovation. He noted, "When faced with a choice between regulation and innovation, we choose to prioritize innovation. This contrasts sharply with Europe and other regions, where the focus is often on regulatory frameworks." Vaishnaw highlighted that this innovative approach has already proven beneficial, especially for communities in remote areas of the country that increasingly rely on new technology to meet their needs. He described the growth driven by technology as both inclusive and robust, stating, "The evolution of AI is transforming every aspect of our lives, similar to how the internet once did." He stressed the importance of India leading the way in AI development, citing ongoing research and development efforts alongside the cultivation of a strong talent pipeline as critical components for success. Moreover, he revealed that India currently boasts 38,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), surpassing the target of 10,000, indicating a significant capacity for AI growth and innovation in the country.
