Azista Space images International Space Station in orbit, boosts India’s space-watch capabilities

Azista Space, a Hyderabad-based company, has made a groundbreaking advancement in India’s private space industry by successfully capturing images of the International Space Station (ISS) from its orbiting satellite. This milestone, achieved on February 3, marks a significant step forward in developing indigenous space situational awareness capabilities. The operation involved Azista’s Earth-observation satellite, AFR, as it tracked and imaged the ISS during two distinct passes in sunlit conditions near the horizon. This capability, often referred to as 'in-orbit snooping,' is crucial as the number of satellites, military platforms, and debris in Earth's orbit continues to rise. Azista's satellite managed to capture images of the fast-moving ISS from distances of approximately 300 kilometers in the first pass and around 245 kilometers in the second, recording a total of 15 frames with a ground sampling resolution of about 2.2 meters. This level of resolution was sufficient to clearly delineate the core structure of the ISS, confirming the effectiveness of the satellite’s tracking algorithms and sensor accuracy. According to the company, both imaging attempts were entirely successful. Srinivas Reddy, managing director of Azista Space, emphasized the significance of these advancements, stating that the AFR satellite supports various clients with cutting-edge imaging and remote-sensing solutions, utilizing fully indigenous technology developed in India. The demonstration is a key element in developing space situational awareness (SSA), which is vital for monitoring the movement of satellites, rocket bodies, and space debris. As the number of satellites increases and geopolitical tensions extend into space, maintaining situational awareness is essential to prevent collisions, protect national space assets, and detect potentially hostile activities. Currently, India operates a range of satellites for communications, navigation, and strategic missions, representing substantial investments. This makes timely awareness of orbital activities increasingly important. While the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has previously demonstrated advanced tracking capabilities, Azista’s success highlights the growing role of the private sector in this traditionally state-dominated domain. Weighing in at about 80 kilograms, the AFR satellite is categorized as a small satellite and is noted as the first of its size and capability to be designed, built, and operated entirely by India’s private industry. Launched in June 2023 via a Falcon 9 rocket during SpaceX’s Transporter-8 mission, it has been operational for approximately 2.5 years and is expected to continue functioning effectively for the remainder of its mission life. In addition to SSA capabilities, Azista's AFR satellite is already engaged in naval surveillance and nighttime imaging for both civilian and defense purposes. Looking ahead, Azista is developing next-generation electro-optical payloads that aim to deliver images with up to 25 centimeters of resolution, significantly sharper than current capabilities. These advancements will be produced at a new manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad, further enhancing India’s capacity to independently monitor its space assets and safeguard national interests without relying on foreign systems.
