Nvidia partner DDN bets on sovereign AI boom as India builds massive data infrastructure

India's initiative to establish a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is rapidly becoming a key factor in the worldwide demand for advanced data platforms. According to DataDirect Networks Inc. (DDN), a company known for its technology that supports some of the globe's largest AI supercomputers, the trend is being driven mainly by government investments rather than private sector interests. In an exclusive interview, Atul Vidwansa, DDN's Managing Director for India and Vice President for Worldwide NVIDIA Cloud Providers, emphasized that sovereign AI is now among the largest consumers of data technology. He pointed out that motivations for this shift extend beyond national security and technological self-sufficiency; countries are also keen on developing AI capabilities that can be exported. "These two factors are compelling nations to embrace AI as a means of accelerating their progress beyond traditional methods," Vidwansa stated. His remarks come as India ramps up its IndiaAI Mission, which focuses on creating domestic large language models, enhancing secure data infrastructure, and bolstering national AI capacity. A significant milestone in this endeavor was the collaboration with Yotta Data Services, which has integrated DDN storage systems to support thousands of NVIDIA B200 graphics processors within its Shakti Cloud platform—recognized as one of the largest sovereign AI setups in Asia. Vidwansa noted that Yotta, India's foremost NVIDIA Cloud Partner, is already addressing the considerable demand for such infrastructure from government entities. "The government of India is their primary client," he revealed, adding that a similar trend is observable on a global scale. DDN's systems are integral to AI computing clusters, efficiently managing the enormous data volumes necessary for GPU operations. NVIDIA itself relies on DDN technology for its internal AI platforms. The partnership between DDN and Yotta signifies both technical excellence and alignment with government policies. Vidwansa explained, "Yotta chose to collaborate with DDN due to our proven features and functionalities, which have been validated by NVIDIA, alongside our made-in-India presence that resonates well with the Indian government." Operating large AI clusters demands specialized expertise inherited from the supercomputing sector. Vidwansa remarked on the challenge of maintaining these costly GPU clusters continuously, emphasizing the need for skilled personnel. Beyond the infrastructure, companies often struggle to see returns on their AI investments due to the high costs and time involved in preparing data for model training. To address this, DDN has developed tools that streamline this process. "A significant portion of the pilot budget is consumed in preparing data for AI readiness," he noted. DDN's HyperPod system automates the tagging of images, audio, and other files, significantly reducing the time and effort required for manual annotation. Vidwansa asserted that India's swift expansion of data centers, vital for supporting energy-intensive AI chips, will be crucial for meeting the country's ambitious goals. He stated that while tax incentives may not be as significant, the fundamental need for the infrastructure itself is paramount. "Data centers are becoming an essential backbone for any nation's AI capability development," he concluded. "Without data centers, AI deployment is impossible." He likened the current effort to building essential transportation infrastructure, such as railways and highways—an expensive but necessary undertaking for national growth.
