
In a bold move to bolster its military capabilities, India is intensifying efforts to develop its own artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign systems. Bengaluru's Sarvam AI, among other domestic startups, is reportedly in advanced discussions with the Indian defense ministry to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) with an investment of ₹300 crore. This initiative is designed to cultivate indigenous AI solutions tailored specifically for the unique challenges faced by the Indian armed forces. The proposed CoE is anticipated to integrate several intelligence units focused on creating AI systems that leverage Indian-specific data and operational scenarios. Such systems are expected to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and decision-making processes by accounting for India's diverse geographical landscapes and climatic conditions. The urgency of this initiative comes in light of recent tensions surrounding AI's role in military operations, particularly following reports that Anthropic's Claude model was involved in U.S. military actions. This situation has led to public disputes regarding the use of AI for autonomous weaponry and domestic surveillance, underlining the national security risks of depending on technologies developed abroad. India's military has already begun incorporating AI into its operations. Notably, during Operation Sindoor last year, defense officials confirmed the use of AI to analyze sensor data and weapon systems, effectively pinpointing enemy locations in Pakistan. Additionally, AI-driven meteorological tools played a crucial role in enhancing long-range targeting capabilities by processing extensive weather data. The global context highlights a rapid integration of AI in modern warfare, as seen in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, where both nations have leveraged AI for intelligence gathering and drone operations. Sarvam AI has gained significant attention for its advancements in AI technology, especially following its launch of large language models at the India AI Impact Summit. However, the defense CoE's objectives extend far beyond language processing. The focus will primarily be on large-scale data handling to support C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems, which are vital for efficient targeting and decision-making. AI is also expected to play a significant role in unmanned aerial systems, satellite technologies, and electronic warfare, marking a new era in India's defense strategy.
