India plans a $11 billion fund to boost domestic chipmaking

India is set to make a significant investment in its semiconductor industry with plans for an $11 billion fund aimed at bolstering domestic chip production. Semiconductors play a pivotal role in powering a wide range of electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops, automobiles, defense systems, and servers that run artificial intelligence applications. According to reports, the Indian government is in the process of finalizing this substantial fund, which will be directed towards encouraging companies to establish chip manufacturing facilities, enhance semiconductor technology, and fortify the local supply chain. This initiative marks India's entry into a global competition to satisfy the escalating demand for semiconductors, crucial for AI systems, consumer electronics, and automotive industries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a semiconductor manufacturing hub is at the heart of this strategy. Ashwini Vaishnaw, India's Union Minister for Electronics and IT, has expressed strong support for this initiative, aiming to position India as a major player in the global semiconductor landscape by 2030. The government's approach focuses on leveraging engineering expertise, design capabilities, and financial incentives to attract chipmakers. Notably, Apple has already begun assembling approximately 25% of its iPhones in India, showcasing the potential of this strategy. The expanded initiative builds on India’s existing $10 billion chip incentive program launched in 2021, which provides subsidies covering up to 50% of the investment for manufacturing facilities. This existing program has already attracted major industry players such as Micron Technology and Foxconn, and has spurred the Tata Group's plans to construct a semiconductor factory in Gujarat. With these developments, India is poised to enhance its export capabilities, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and cultivate a robust industrial ecosystem tailored for semiconductor production.
