Chaos, confusion and $200 billion dreams: What I saw at India’s AI summit

This week, India hosted a significant AI event that aimed to position the nation as a key player in the artificial intelligence landscape. However, the summit was overshadowed by organizational chaos and confusion, raising questions about the effectiveness of its execution. Despite the disarray, major U.S. tech companies were keen to engage with the Indian market, highlighting its promising AI potential and making several announcements. As I navigated New Delhi since Monday, I found coverage of the AI Impact Summit to be one of my most challenging reporting experiences. The city’s notorious traffic proved to be even more problematic than usual, with some journeys coming to a standstill. On Wednesday, I had to attend events and interviews at three different hotels, which made timely arrivals a daunting task. There was uncertainty about our access to the Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue, especially on Thursday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to inaugurate the event. Initially unclear about media entry times, we later discovered that access was permitted at 6 a.m., but even then, we faced delays at the gates as security struggled to manage the influx of journalists. Inside the venue, the confusion only intensified, as security personnel issued conflicting instructions. Many delegates expressed their frustrations about the event's organization. Additionally, the summit faced its share of controversies, including the uncertainty surrounding Bill Gates' keynote address. Although his foundation had confirmed his presence earlier in the week, a later announcement indicated that he would not attend. Compounding the drama, a university was reportedly removed from the summit after it claimed a robot dog showcased at the event was its own creation, when in fact it was developed by the Chinese company Unitree. The university later clarified that it aimed to teach students AI programming using globally available tools. Indian IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw acknowledged the issues experienced on the summit's opening day. Another moment that captured attention on social media involved a staged photo op where Modi had delegates holding hands on stage. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei did not follow the instructions, leading to scrutiny, with Altman later admitting he was confused about his role. Just days prior, Anthropic had released an advertisement mocking OpenAI's advertising plans for ChatGPT. Despite these incidents, the summit attracted a wealth of tech industry leaders, including Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Altman, who praised India's vast talent pool and burgeoning consumer market. "The excitement here has been incredible to witness," Altman remarked. During the summit, several tech firms announced partnerships and initiatives related to India's AI landscape. OpenAI revealed it would become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services' data center, while Google announced collaborations with researchers and educational institutions regarding its Gemini AI feature. The Indian government took the opportunity to promote the country as an emerging AI hub, aiming to secure $200 billion in AI investments over the next two years. Despite the tumultuous atmosphere of the summit, the enthusiasm from major tech players for India's growing market remains palpable.
