
In recent years, the discussion surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transitioned from a focus on chatbots to the development of more advanced and reliable models. Yet, beneath this evolution lies a significant shift that is quietly redefining revenue generation in the sector. A recent report by SenseAI, titled "State of AI," highlights that global investments in AI are projected to reach a staggering $800 billion by 2025, with venture capital contributing a substantial $226 billion. Notably, the emphasis is shifting away from merely enhancing models to leveraging applications where AI is actively being utilized, commercialized, and monetized. As AI adoption accelerates, India finds itself entering what experts call the "Application Phase" of AI. This phase is anchored by three fundamental pillars: firstly, Vertical AI, which comprises models specifically trained for sectors such as healthcare, legal, and finance. Secondly, the concept of Wrapper Evolution is emerging, wherein companies are creating "compound AI systems" that integrate multiple AI models to enhance functionality. Lastly, India is also achieving scalability through cost-efficient strategies that leverage existing models. The nation is making notable strides across various sectors, including enterprise/SaaS, consumer technology, and regional language AI. Additionally, Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are evolving from mere support roles into dynamic innovation hubs. The report indicates that India is transforming from a mere "back office" to a pivotal "AI engine" on the global stage. With over 1,200 AI startups—accounting for 75.4% of the country’s AI ecosystem—focused on application development, the report reveals that more than 80% of AI funding in India is directed towards applications and tooling. Remarkably, 60% of these startups are generating revenue at an early stage. The report emphasizes that India is cultivating a distinctly application-first ecosystem that is growing rapidly yet differs significantly from models observed in the US or China. Furthermore, the report draws parallels between the current landscape and the earlier SaaS 1.0 era, describing it as "AI-native." With a focus on revenue generation, global aspirations, cost advantages, domain expertise, and robust engineering talent, India is well-positioned to lead in AI applications. Although still in the nascent stages of competing with major global tech players and entering the so-called "model wars," India boasts a vast developer community and significant industry knowledge, which are crucial for developing AI tools that address real-world challenges and propel the AI economy forward.
