
In a recent panel discussion in Kolkata, experts emphasized the urgent need for India to develop scalable and inclusive AI applications aimed at the next billion users. This event showcased over 75 early-stage startups supported by the IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, which plays a vital role in nurturing innovative ventures. The discussion featured insights from notable figures such as Prof. Vimal Kumar M from IIM Calcutta, angel investor Deepak Daftari, and SuperProcure Co-founder Manisha Saraf, with Gaurav Kapoor, Chief Business Officer of IIMCIP, serving as the moderator. Participants highlighted India's potential to spearhead AI innovation by concentrating on affordability and accessibility, particularly in crucial sectors like logistics, agriculture, education, and public services. According to a statement from IIMCIP, the participating startups received hands-on training in Google's generative AI tools, including Gemini 2.5, Gemma 3.0, Vertex AI, and AI Studio. This initiative is part of a broader national effort by Google for Startups to empower emerging entrepreneurs. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with Google engineers, venture capitalists, and domain experts through workshops and mentorship sessions, gaining essential insights on creating AI-driven businesses. "Generative AI represents more than just a technological advancement; it's a transformative approach to imagining solutions tailored for India," remarked Enisha Kalita, Program Manager at Google for Startups. Subhrangshu Sanyal, CEO of IIMCIP, added that the collaboration is designed to encourage innovation that promotes sustainable development and enhances livelihoods. "By equipping early-stage founders with these tools and networks, we empower them to tackle real-world challenges through impactful innovation," he stated.
