Airbound, an innovative drone startup based in India, has successfully raised $8.65 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Lachy Groom, co-founder of Physical Intelligence. This funding will support the company's ambitious plans to initiate a drone delivery pilot program in collaboration with a private hospital while aiming for a groundbreaking one-cent delivery model using its uniquely designed blended-wing-body aircraft. The seed funding round saw participation from notable investors including Humba Ventures and existing backers like Lightspeed Venture Partners, alongside contributions from high-profile professionals from Tesla, SpaceX, and Anduril. Established in 2020 by Naman Pushp, who started the venture at just 15 years old and is now 20, Airbound has crafted a drone utilizing a tail-sitter design, allowing it to launch vertically like a rocket. This drone, which boasts a lightweight carbon fiber frame, is designed to deliver packages at a fraction of the cost associated with current methods, achieving savings of up to 20 times over traditional delivery systems. Pushp explained that Airbound's aircraft utilizes a blended-wing-body shape with dual propellers, diverging from the standard quadcopter configuration. This design enables it to efficiently transition from a vertical launch to horizontal flight. Aiming to revolutionize delivery logistics, Airbound's goal is to achieve one-cent delivery by innovatively optimizing energy usage for transporting goods. Currently, electric two-wheelers are prevalent for deliveries in India, which carry payloads under 3 kilograms while weighing around 150 kilograms themselves. Airbound’s TRT drone, however, is specifically engineered for smaller payloads, eliminating the need for a human operator and drastically reducing the transport weight. The founder emphasized that this reduction in weight translates into a significant decrease in energy costs, making the one-cent delivery model a plausible reality. Pushp expressed his belief that there is tremendous potential for drones, stating, "There is actually an incredible amount of gaps between where drones are today and where they can be." The TRT's innovative design enhances aerodynamic efficiency by minimizing disruptive propeller movements, allowing for a higher lift-to-drag ratio. This efficiency means the drone requires less thrust to remain airborne, significantly increasing its energy conservation during flight. The initial version of the drone can carry a payload of up to 2.2 pounds while weighing just 3.3 pounds. Plans are already in motion for a second version that aims to support payloads of 6.6 pounds while weighing only 2.6 pounds, with a prototype expected to be ready by mid-next year. Pushp's journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was inspired by a video of Zipline, a drone delivery service. His first prototype, a makeshift model crafted from basic materials, earned him initial funding, propelling him toward Y Combinator, albeit without acceptance. Nonetheless, he secured additional funding from various sources, including a $1,000 grant from the 1517 Fund, which laid the groundwork for Airbound. Currently, the production cost of each drone is approximately $2,000, with delivery expenses around ₹24 (approximately $0.27). The startup is targeting a reduction in delivery costs to below ₹5 (around $0.05) by the end of 2026, with aspirations of reaching one million deliveries daily by mid-2027. To achieve these ambitious goals, Airbound is enhancing its manufacturing capabilities to produce over 100 drones per day, up from its current rate of one per day at its Bengaluru facility. The company has commenced its pilot program with Narayana Health in Bengaluru, focusing on delivering medical supplies, while also eyeing opportunities in sectors like quick commerce and food delivery. As Airbound plans to expand its operations beyond India after scaling its delivery model, it is in discussions with regulatory bodies, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to facilitate the launch of its flights in the near future. With over $10 million raised to date and a dedicated team of 50, Airbound is poised for significant growth and market impact in the coming years.
