Space start-up plans to build Indias first private GPS constellation

In a groundbreaking move for India's space sector, Chennai-based start-up VyomIC has announced its ambitious plans to create the country’s inaugural private global satellite constellation. This initiative is set to enhance high-precision positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services, a vital component for numerous industries. Founded by a team of IIT-Madras alumni, VyomIC has successfully secured $1.6 million in pre-seed funding, marking a significant step toward launching low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites dedicated to PNT services. The funding round was led by Speciale Invest, with contributions from BYT Capital and DeVC. According to the company, these funds will facilitate the advancement of their LEO-based PNT payload, support a spaceborne demonstration mission, and enable growth in team hiring and business development. Co-founders Lokesh Kabdal, Vibhor Jain, and Anurag Patil, who previously spearheaded India's student-led hyperloop initiative and engaged in commercial drone swarm projects, are determined to establish a next-generation global system. "We are not merely creating an Indian alternative to GPS; we are engineering a system designed for autonomy, security, and precision," stated Jain. VyomIC is poised to deliver centimeter-level positioning and nanosecond-level timing, essential for sectors such as defense, finance, telecommunications, and autonomous technology. The start-up's innovative approach promises to provide signals that are resistant to spoofing and jamming, addressing vulnerabilities in existing systems like GPS and GLONASS. The utilization of LEO satellites will enable higher precision, quicker convergence, stronger signal power, and improved coverage, particularly in urban areas where signal strength is often compromised. Furthermore, VyomIC aims to unlock indoor PNT capabilities, allowing for navigation in previously inaccessible spaces. Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner at Speciale Invest, emphasized the critical nature of resilient navigation in today’s world, saying, "In an era increasingly defined by autonomy, defense technology, and time-sensitive infrastructure, reliable navigation is essential. VyomIC's vision for a sovereign constellation directly addresses this necessity. We are excited to support a team that has executed ambitious projects and is now tackling one of the core elements of modern civilization—PNT." With its sights set on building a comprehensive constellation, VyomIC envisions delivering secure, real-time navigation and timing services to users worldwide, laying a strong foundation for future autonomous systems and sovereign infrastructures.
