Indian technology companies, having recently formed alliances with leading AI innovators like Anthropic and OpenAI, are not expected to experience immediate repercussions from the US government's new restrictions on access to advanced AI models. However, this situation has sparked renewed discussions on the extent to which Indian firms can rely on foreign AI platforms as the industry transitions from trial phases to large-scale implementations. Anthropic, the creator of the AI model Claude, recently announced a withdrawal of its access to the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. This decision follows a directive issued by the US government on June 12 that required the company to limit access to these models for non-US citizens, including its own employees who do not hold US citizenship. With the implementation of such access controls deemed impractical, Anthropic has temporarily retracted both models. This development coincided with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) unveiling a partnership with Anthropic, in which TCS committed to training 50,000 employees on the Claude platform and developing industry-specific solutions. TCS is not alone in this endeavor; Infosys and HCLTech have also partnered with Anthropic and OpenAI in recent months. In addition to its collaboration with Anthropic, TCS has been actively engaging with Mistral AI to assist clients in deploying customized AI models, and it has a joint effort with OpenAI aimed at creating specialized AI solutions and enhancing AI infrastructure. TCS's CEO, K Krithivasan, emphasized that the value of enterprise AI lies in understanding business contexts and orchestrating complex systems, which they aim to achieve by leveraging Claude alongside their engineering expertise. HCLTech has also made significant moves in the AI space, having been an early collaborator with OpenAI and recently investing $150 million in the Indian AI startup Sarvam AI. This investment represents a pivotal moment as it marks the first instance of a major Indian IT service firm investing in a domestic AI venture, with HCLTech acquiring a 10.46% stake in Sarvam as part of a $300 million Series B funding round. Analysts believe that the US directive will not significantly disrupt the ongoing projects of Indian IT firms, as most partnerships are still in their infancy, focused on training and developing solutions rather than immediate deployment. Many companies are transitioning from pilot programs to large-scale implementations, and experts suggest that the current situation may not hinder these efforts. However, the recent restrictions raise concerns about the accessibility of cutting-edge AI models, which could be influenced by fluctuating national security and export control policies. To mitigate risks, many large IT firms are diversifying their partnerships across various AI platforms, ensuring that restrictions on one model do not severely impact their operations. The recent events have reignited discussions about India’s need to establish its own advanced AI capabilities rather than relying predominantly on foreign technologies. Some industry leaders advocate for India to become a hub for AI applications, while others argue for the development of indigenous AI models. As Indian IT firms seek to fill the gaps left by generative AI tools, they are increasingly recognized for their vital role in integrating these technologies into complex business landscapes. A report from ICICI Securities predicts that AI-driven services could create a market worth $300-400 billion by 2030, signifying a robust growth opportunity for the sector. While the US restrictions may not immediately disrupt Indian IT's AI strategies, they serve as a cautionary indicator for the future. As AI technology continues to evolve, geopolitical factors may increasingly dictate access to critical models, shaping the landscape of the industry.
