
This week, the Indian Union Cabinet announced a significant milestone in the country’s semiconductor landscape by approving the establishment of its first mini and micro light-emitting diode (LED) display manufacturing facility. Set to rise in Dholera, Gujarat, this venture will be spearheaded by Crystal Matrix Ltd (CML), a Hyderabad-based company, as part of the ambitious India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). In addition to Crystal Matrix, the Cabinet also sanctioned a semiconductor assembly and testing facility by Suchi Semicon Private Ltd, located in Surat, which will focus on power and automotive chips. Mini and micro-LEDs are advanced semiconductor components that promise enhanced brightness and energy efficiency compared to traditional LED technology. Their applications are rapidly expanding into high-end televisions, smartwatches, augmented and virtual reality devices, automotive dashboards, and various wearable gadgets. The new facility is expected to implement Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, aiming for an impressive annual output of 72,000 square meters of display panels and 24,000 RGB wafer sets. However, despite this ambitious project, financial insights into Crystal Matrix reveal potential challenges ahead. According to records from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Crystal Matrix reported operational revenues of just Rs 1.07 crore for FY25, a modest increase from Rs 53 lakh the previous year, with a profit after tax of merely Rs 1.12 lakh. The company’s asset portfolio primarily includes office equipment and furniture, with no indication of semiconductor manufacturing machinery or cleanroom facilities necessary for this high-tech endeavor. Despite lacking a historical background in semiconductor production, Crystal Matrix has partnered with two South Korean technology firms: Lumens, known for LED technologies, and Soft-Epi, a specialist in GaN epitaxy. Industry experts believe these partnerships could enhance the credibility of the project. Notably, MV Gowtama, the chairman, has a reputable background in the electronics sector, while advisors with extensive experience in semiconductor operations are stepping up to guide the initiative. While the project’s success hinges on proving high-volume manufacturability, analysts suggest that entering the MicroLED market at this stage could provide India with a competitive edge before global market structures become entrenched. The significance of this facility extends beyond just display panels; it could serve as a foundation for a wide range of high-value applications in industries such as power electronics and photonics. However, the journey is fraught with challenges. Establishing commercial-scale GaN display manufacturing requires substantial investments in sophisticated infrastructure, including reactors and cleanroom environments. Notably, government subsidies under the ISM are contingent upon the company’s own capital expenditure, which means that Crystal Matrix must first commit significant resources before receiving governmental support. As the India Semiconductor Mission progresses, with 12 projects now approved and a total committed investment of Rs 1.64 lakh crore, the stakes are high. This initiative aims to build a comprehensive semiconductor value chain in India, encompassing chip manufacturing, assembly, testing, and display technologies. With ongoing efforts from key players like Tata Electronics and Micron Technology, India is positioning itself as a formidable player in the global semiconductor arena.
