India AI Impact Summit: First chip projects under semiconductor plan to begin production by Feb-end, says MeitY Secy

India is gearing up for a significant boost in its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, with the first of ten approved projects expected to kick off commercial production by the end of February. This announcement was made by S. Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), during the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi. Among the projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 1), US-based Micron Technology is set to lead the charge by producing essential memory components designed for artificial intelligence applications. Krishnan emphasized the importance of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which serves as a critical building block for sophisticated AI computing systems. Looking ahead, Krishnan highlighted the forthcoming phase of the initiative, known as India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which was unveiled in the recent Union Budget. This phase aims to further bolster local manufacturing efforts with sustained support from the government. Additionally, he pointed out that recent fiscal measures have clarified tax regulations for international companies establishing AI cloud and data-center operations in India, a strategy intended to lure significant investments in computing infrastructure. India's commitment to becoming a sustainable and scalable data center hub is underscored by its extensive electricity grid and growing renewable energy resources. Krishnan noted that the government is focused on enhancing access to computing power rather than directly investing in data center construction. He stated, "India has prioritized subsidizing access to AI compute rather than directly funding data center creation," signaling a strategic approach to fostering a robust AI ecosystem in the country.
