India AI Impact Summit draws $250 billion in infrastructure pledges, says IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The recent AI Impact Summit in India has garnered over $250 billion in investment commitments aimed at enhancing the nation’s infrastructure, as reported by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a press briefing on February 20. Vaishnaw revealed that the summit has seen participation from 70 countries that have signed the Delhi Declaration, with ongoing discussions to include even more nations. He expressed optimism that the total number of endorsing countries could surpass 80 by the summit's conclusion on February 21. The details of this significant declaration are set to be made public on the final day of the event. Describing the summit as an overwhelming success, Vaishnaw noted that more than 500,000 visitors attended, with substantial involvement from investors, leading global tech companies, and innovative startups. He also announced that the government will soon embark on the next phase of its national AI strategy. "Our journey has been purposeful and systematic, focusing on the various layers of the AI stack to build a solid foundation," he stated. This next phase, termed AI Mission 2.0, aims to develop advanced AI models, shared computing infrastructures, and safety frameworks to bolster domestic capabilities throughout the AI value chain. Additionally, the minister highlighted the establishment of institutional frameworks for AI safety, which will be supported by 12 specialized institutes dedicated to standards and governance. On the semiconductor front, Vaishnaw indicated that the groundwork for a new chip manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh would be laid soon, with Micron Technology's facility expected to commence commercial production on February 28.
