The recent executive order by President Donald Trump, which introduces a $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications, has sparked significant concern in India, the leading source of skilled labor for the program. H-1B visas, which are temporary work permits, enable U.S. employers to recruit highly qualified foreign professionals for specialized roles within the country. Notably, Indian nationals have consistently comprised the majority of H-1B recipients. In the fiscal year 2024, statistics from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services revealed that over 70% of H-1B visa approvals—approximately 280,000—were granted to applicants from India. In response to this new directive, the Indian government issued a statement highlighting the potential negative impact on technological advancement. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the mobility of skilled professionals has been critical to fostering innovation, economic development, and competitiveness in both India and the United States. Moreover, the ministry warned that this measure could lead to serious humanitarian issues, particularly for families affected by these changes. To assist those impacted, the Indian Embassy in the U.S. has set up a hotline for Indian citizens seeking support. Despite these challenges, Trump has maintained a cordial relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, previously expressing strong support for their partnership. Modi also acknowledged Trump's sentiments, reinforcing the positive trajectory of U.S.-India relations, which are characterized by a comprehensive and strategic partnership.
