Anthropic’s Claude Mythos triggers call for sovereign AI infrastructure in India: All details

In light of escalating cybersecurity worries surrounding Anthropic's Claude Mythos, the Indian government is urging the AI firm to establish local hosting for its models within the country. Officials fear that relying on foreign-hosted infrastructure could jeopardize national security, compromise data protection, and create challenges regarding compliance and legal jurisdiction over sensitive information. According to a report by Money Control, representatives from Anthropic's Indian team recently engaged in virtual discussions with officials from the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). These discussions focused on gaining insights into the Claude Mythos AI model, evaluating potential cybersecurity threats, and reviewing Anthropic's overall security measures. A government official revealed that following the emergence of concerns regarding the Claude Mythos, Anthropic's team participated in exploratory talks with government stakeholders. The aim was to assess the model's maturity, the validity of the claimed threats, and the necessary safeguards. This initiative comes as the government seeks to enhance its control over potent AI systems, especially those utilized in critical sectors such as banking and telecommunications. The report highlighted a shift in concerns from general cybersecurity to sovereign implications. Sources indicated that these meetings were not intended for policy formulation. Initially, the government aimed to determine whether the claims represented a significant technological advancement or were exaggerated. Furthermore, there are strong sentiments that any advanced AI models should only be deployed in sensitive domains—like government operations or the financial sector—if they are hosted domestically or on secure, government-approved cloud platforms. This situation has also prompted the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to take action, as the government has requested telecom operators to evaluate potential risks and their preparedness to combat such threats.
