According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, India has emerged as the global leader in mobile data consumption, with the average smartphone user consuming an astonishing 36 GB of data each month. This figure not only highlights India's dominance but also reflects a significant transformation in the country's digital engagement. Experts predict that this staggering demand for digital content is poised to escalate even further, with monthly consumption expected to nearly double to 65 GB by 2031. This rapid increase is primarily driven by the swift deployment of 5G technology and the growing popularity of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. India, alongside mainland China, has been a key contributor to a 20% surge in global mobile network data traffic recorded from the third quarter of 2024 to 2025. The transition to 5G in India is advancing rapidly, with projections indicating that 5G subscriptions could reach 394 million by the end of 2025, representing 32% of all mobile connections. By the decade's end, this number is anticipated to exceed 1 billion, capturing a remarkable 79% of the market share and reinforcing India's status as a pivotal telecommunications center. In addition, the introduction of cost-effective 5G FWA devices is significantly influencing this growth. This technology, which offers high-speed internet access, is accelerating the rise in data traffic, with leading providers like Jio and Airtel reporting over 12 million combined connections. Looking to the future, the report also speculates that global subscriptions for 6G technology could reach 180 million by 2031. However, the immediate challenge lies in optimizing infrastructure and investing in services to meet the demands of India's extraordinary data consumption and ensure a robust digital future.
