AI Impact Summit 2026: India signs US-led Pax Silica; electronics, semiconductor industry to benefit greatly

In a significant move for its technology sector, India has officially joined the US-led Pax Silica alliance during the India AI Impact Summit held in Delhi on Friday. This alliance is designed to strengthen resilient supply chains for critical minerals and artificial intelligence technologies, marking a pivotal moment in US-India relations as both nations work towards finalizing a bilateral trade agreement. The Pax Silica initiative aims to enhance technological collaboration and ensure secure access to essential resources for next-generation industries. A central component of the initiative is to establish a robust economic framework that fosters AI-driven growth among its partner countries. Member nations currently include Australia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, Singapore, the UAE, and the UK. The declaration emphasizes the necessity of a reliable supply chain for mutual economic security, stating, "Economic value and growth will flow through and across all levels of the global AI supply chain, creating historic opportunities and demand for energy, critical minerals, manufacturing, and technological infrastructure." Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed optimism about the benefits of Pax Silica for India's electronics and semiconductor sectors. He highlighted that the first semiconductor plant in India is set to commence commercial production shortly, with ten additional plants already established or under development. "Advanced two-nanometer chips are being designed right here in India, contributing to the emergence of a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, which Pax Silica will further support," Vaishnaw noted. In his remarks, Vaishnaw also took a swipe at the opposition Congress party, suggesting that had a spirit of innovation been present since 1947, India’s growth trajectory could have been much different. He stressed that the youth of India would significantly benefit from this initiative, as the semiconductor industry anticipates a need for around one million skilled professionals. US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, underscored the strategic importance of India's participation in Pax Silica, asserting that India's considerable engineering talent and advancements in critical mineral processing will enhance US-India tech cooperation. He affirmed that this partnership will drive AI innovation and adoption for the foreseeable future, enabling the sharing of trusted AI technology globally, particularly with partners like India.
