India is set to join the Pax Silica initiative, a U.S.-led effort aimed at reshaping the global landscape of semiconductor and AI infrastructure supply chains. This move marks a significant win for Washington in its quest to influence access to advanced silicon-based technologies. The Pax Silica initiative, originally launched during the Trump administration, seeks to secure the supply chains critical for silicon technologies. With India's participation, formalized at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, the alliance now includes a diverse group of nations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, Israel, the United Kingdom, Australia, Qatar, and the UAE. India's involvement adds a major player from the BRICS bloc, enhancing the alliance at a time when competition for AI hardware is becoming increasingly fierce among global powers. Jacob Helberg, the U.S. undersecretary of State for economic affairs, emphasized that the initiative is more about strengthening U.S. supply chains than about countering China. He stated, "We view India as a partner to help de-risk and diversify those supply chains." India's entry into Pax Silica comes as the U.S. faces scrutiny regarding its policies on foreign access to advanced AI chips. Recent reports have highlighted potential conflicts of interest, particularly involving the UAE's Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who acquired a significant stake in a cryptocurrency venture linked to the Trump family shortly before the U.S. allowed the UAE access to a substantial number of advanced AI chips annually. In a bid to streamline access for Pax Silica members, the U.S. Department of State plans to introduce a new "concierge service" aimed at facilitating the procurement of U.S.-made AI semiconductors. Helberg noted that this initiative is designed to leverage diplomatic channels to assist trusted governments and industry leaders, making it easier for them to navigate the complexities of chip procurement and delivery. He remarked, "This is really part of our strategy to win the AI race." The unfolding dynamics of the Pax Silica initiative reveal a strategic shift in how nations will approach the critical technology of AI and semiconductor manufacturing in the coming years.
