India puts Starlink launch on hold amid security concerns linked to West Asia conflict: Report

India has postponed the launch of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service, as security agencies have yet to grant the necessary approvals for the company to commence operations in the country. This development is reported by Bloomberg News and is largely due to growing concerns regarding the usage of Starlink terminals in light of the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the US-Israel alliance. The Indian government is particularly worried about its capacity to regulate a foreign-controlled communications network during sensitive geopolitical situations. While Starlink had previously obtained a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license nearly a year ago, this was merely one step in a more extensive regulatory journey. Final security clearances from the Ministry of Home Affairs remain pending, leaving Starlink in limbo. Compounding the issue is the revelation that Starlink terminals have been utilized amidst the Middle East conflict, raising alarms since the service is not licensed to operate in Iran. Indian authorities express concerns about their oversight capabilities for a US-based satellite internet provider during times of international discord. Last year, Starlink conducted security demonstrations that were reviewed by telecom authorities and a specialized security panel. However, Indian officials are now demanding further compliance measures and are questioning how the company plans to meet India's security standards, particularly given SpaceX's international operations and American ownership. The report highlights a shift in Indian authorities' approach to the satellite communications sector, reflecting unease over dependence on foreign-controlled infrastructure amid escalating geopolitical tensions. Despite these hurdles, discussions between Starlink and Indian authorities continue, with the company submitting affidavits to demonstrate its compliance with local data storage requirements. Starlink has also established infrastructure in India, including ten gateways and a hub in Mumbai. Senior executives from SpaceX have met with government officials in hopes of advancing the approval process. However, India is cautious about granting full approval until all security concerns are adequately addressed. Additionally, the stalemate has postponed the finalization of a satellite spectrum pricing framework essential for commercial launches by both Starlink and domestic competitors. Although the Department of Telecommunications has completed the framework, it has yet to be presented to the Union Cabinet for approval, further complicating Starlink's ambitions in one of the largest underserved broadband markets globally.
