Navigating the roads after a DUI conviction can be fraught with complexities. In many states, individuals wishing to retain access to their vehicles must install ignition interlock devices to ensure they are sober before starting their cars. A prominent provider of these devices is Intoxalock, based in Des Moines, Iowa. This device resembles a compact box with a plastic tube, into which the driver must blow to measure their blood alcohol concentration. To start the vehicle, the driver's alcohol level must be below the legal limit established by their state. Some versions of the device also incorporate GPS tracking and even take photos each time the user blows into the tube for verification purposes. Users must lease these interlock devices, which typically cost between $70 and $120 monthly. However, passing the initial breath test is just the beginning. The interlock system is designed to conduct random retests during the trip, and drivers must be alert to these notifications. Intoxalock advises keeping the radio volume low and windows closed to ensure the beep from the device is heard. Once alerted, users have a window of 3 to 15 minutes to safely pull over and retake the test. Failing to comply with a random retest doesn't stop the vehicle immediately, but it can trigger alerts such as honking and flashing lights to signal the driver to pull over and turn off the engine. Additionally, depending on regulatory guidelines in the state, users may face temporary lockout periods, adding to the challenges of maintaining mobility while adhering to legal restrictions.
