To begin with, many may recall from their high school chemistry classes the structure of benzene—a six-carbon ring characterized by alternating single and double bonds, which maintains a flat configuration. However, the nuances of these bonds are often overlooked, particularly how the double bonds are influenced by orbitals that extend above and below the carbon nuclei. In benzene, the electrons within these orbitals become delocalized due to the alternating bond types, resulting in a molecule that can be envisioned as having electrons existing in a cloud-like formation. This principle applies even to larger molecules with similar bonding characteristics. The arrangement of orbitals in benzene ensures that any electrons circulating around the molecule will ultimately return to their original position.
