IBM stock plunges 23% as it says clients are spending less on its AI products

In a shocking turn of events, IBM's stock plummeted nearly 23% in premarket trading on Tuesday following the company's disappointing financial results. The downturn was attributed to a notable decrease in customer spending on its AI infrastructure and software offerings. Just before the market opened, shares, which had closed at $290 on Monday, were projected to start at around $224. The dramatic decline came after IBM reported a second-quarter shortfall in its software and infrastructure segment, a performance drop that CEO Arvind Krishna linked to the delayed rollout of its new z17 mainframes, engineered for AI workloads. In a candid letter to investors, Krishna admitted, "This quarter we faltered. We did not adapt and move quickly enough, and numerous large deals failed to close on the timelines we expected, driving the majority of our shortfall." He further explained that a significant factor contributing to the disappointing results was clients reducing their expenditures on IBM products, choosing instead to focus their capital on essential purchases of servers, storage, and memory in anticipation of impending price increases. Despite reporting a slight 1% increase in overall revenues to $17.2 billion for the second quarter, it fell short of analyst expectations. The infrastructure division specifically saw a revenue decline of 7%. This situation is still evolving, and further developments are anticipated.
