Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 N offers more sound, more shifts, more smiles

As Hyundai's N division approaches its milestone 10th anniversary in 2025, it’s carving out a niche for itself in the performance car market. While it doesn’t yet boast the prestige of established brands like BMW's M series or Mercedes-Benz's AMG, the N division has quickly gained a reputation for producing fun and accessible vehicles, notably in vibrant shades of blue. The excitement continues with the introduction of the Ioniq 6 N, a high-performance electric vehicle that builds on the fun factor established by its predecessor, the Ioniq 5 N. This latest model features a striking design complemented by a powerful performance profile, appealing to both EV enthusiasts and speed seekers alike. At the heart of the Ioniq 6 N are two enhanced electric motors that collectively generate an impressive 641 horsepower (478 kW) and 568 lb-ft (779 Nm) of torque, delivering power to all four wheels. What sets this model apart is its advanced regenerative braking system, which can decelerate at rates of up to 0.6 G—double the capability of most electric vehicles that typically switch to friction brakes at 0.3 G. The vehicle's dimensions have also been optimized for better stability and performance, featuring a wheelbase that is 0.6 inches longer than the standard Ioniq 6. This modification accommodates larger 20-inch wheels fitted with 275-section-width Pirelli P-Zero 5 tires, enhancing both grip and handling. Powering the Ioniq 6 N is an 84 kWh battery that offers an estimated range of 291 miles (469 km) according to the WLTP cycle, translating to approximately 250 miles (400 km) under EPA standards—slightly less than the non-N Ioniq 6. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a sophisticated dual-mode inverter. In lower power scenarios, it utilizes a silicon-carbide inverter for optimal efficiency, while at high speeds, it switches to a silicon inverter to provide the necessary current for maximum power output.
