A drone flying at 600 km/h? This Hyderabad startup wants to redefine aerial warfare

India's drone industry is evolving, pushing boundaries from traditional surveillance and logistics to advanced combat applications. One of the standout innovations in this space is the Nightshade ADX-1, a state-of-the-art jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being crafted by Apollyon Dynamics, a defense startup based in Hyderabad. The Nightshade ADX-1 is engineered for operations in hostile airspace where speed, autonomy, and resilience against electronic warfare are paramount. With impressive cruising and attack velocities reaching between 600 and 700 km/h, it ranks among the fastest tactical UAVs developed by Indian firms. In comparison, Iran's Shahed-238, known for its speed of approximately 520 km/h, is now outpaced by the Nightshade, which is expected to enhance the challenges of interception significantly. Apollyon Dynamics has stated that the drone can achieve a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 70 kg, with the capacity to deliver modular payloads, including precision explosives weighing up to 5 kg. Designed to penetrate more than 100 km into adversarial territory, future variants of the UAV may extend operational ranges beyond 150 km, marking a significant advancement in India's defense capabilities. A notable feature of the Nightshade ADX-1 is its ability to function in GPS-denied environments. By integrating an Inertial Navigation System (INS) with terrain-following technology, the drone can maintain accurate flight paths even in conditions where satellite navigation is compromised. This capability not only enhances its stealth by flying at low altitudes but also increases its survivability against sophisticated air defense systems. The UAV's primary mission profile focuses on Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), targeting hostile radar installations to pave the way for subsequent air operations. Equipped with anti-radiation homing sensors, the Nightshade ADX-1 can autonomously detect and neutralize radar emissions, thereby improving the safety of allied aircraft and missiles. Founded by BTech graduates Jayant Khatri and Sourya Choudhury, Apollyon Dynamics is a deep-tech defense startup nurtured at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus. Achieving a significant milestone in early 2026, the company successfully test-launched its UAV from a moving vehicle, showcasing its mobile launch capabilities. To further accelerate its development and production efforts, Apollyon has secured ₹4 crore in pre-seed funding and has unveiled what it touts as the Indian Army's first mobile drone laboratory, which facilitates rapid deployment and customization of first-person-view (FPV) drones. The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East underscore the critical need for swift, autonomous drones designed to operate within contested airspace. As electronic warfare tactics evolve, the integration of jet propulsion, autonomous navigation, and radar-hunting capabilities positions platforms like the Nightshade ADX-1 as pivotal assets in modern military strategy.
