Melissa set to be the strongest hurricane to ever strike Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa is on track to make landfall in southern Jamaica within the next 24 hours, and forecasts indicate it could become the most devastating storm the island has ever faced. As of Monday morning, Melissa has officially reached Category 5 status, boasting winds of 160 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Over the next day, the hurricane may experience fluctuations in intensity, potentially undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the conditions in the region—including exceptionally warm waters and low wind shear—are conducive to sustaining a powerful storm, raising the possibility of further intensification. This storm is expected to surpass Hurricane Gilbert, which struck Jamaica in 1988 as a Category 3 storm, resulting in 45 fatalities. With a history spanning over 150 years, Melissa is likely to be recorded as the strongest tropical system to hit Jamaica.
