Melissa strikes Jamaica, tied as most powerful Atlantic storm to come ashore

Hurricane Melissa struck the southwestern coast of Jamaica near New Hope on Tuesday at 1 PM ET, bringing with it astonishing sustained winds of 185 mph. The National Hurricane Center's update confirmed the precise timing and location of the storm's landfall, with expert Larry Kelly labeling Melissa as an "extremely dangerous and life-threatening" hurricane. This devastating storm is unleashing torrential rainfall, significant storm surge, and destructive winds upon the Caribbean island, which is home to approximately 3 million residents. The impact is anticipated to be catastrophic and long-lasting, as Melissa's extraordinary strength poses severe risks to life and property. Melissa's intense overnight strengthening has etched its name in history, tying it with the infamous Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 as the most powerful hurricane to ever make landfall in the Atlantic Basin. This classification encompasses the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands. Additionally, Melissa has matched the Labor Day storm in terms of intensity at landfall, with a central pressure of 892 millibars. In the broader context, Melissa ranks as the second-strongest hurricane on record in terms of wind speed within the Atlantic basin, surpassed only by Hurricane Allen, which reached 190 mph in 1980. Notably, only Hurricane Wilma (882 millibars) and Hurricane Gilbert (888 millibars) have recorded lower sea pressures. As the storm continues to wreak havoc, the focus remains on the safety and resilience of those affected in Jamaica.
