Humanoid robots touted as Wall Street's next 'golden goose' amid forecasts of a $200 billion boom

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son recently emphasized the potential of physical AI and robotics as the breeding ground for the next trillion-dollar enterprise. Humanoid robots, engineered to replicate human movements and functions, have gained significant media attention, from their roles as baggage handlers in Japanese airports to Tesla's ambitious Optimus project. Market analysts are predicting a transformative decade ahead, with the humanoid robotics industry projected to expand dramatically from its current valuation of $2 to $3 billion to an astounding $200 billion by 2035. Zornitza Todorova, Barclays' head of thematic FICC research and co-author of the bank's insightful report titled "AI Gets Physical," highlighted this potential during an interview on CNBC’s "Squawk Box Europe." Todorova stated, "This is truly the decade of the robot." She explained that humanoid robots represent the next wave of automation, addressing labor shortages caused by aging populations, urbanization, and evolving job preferences. These machines are already successfully undertaking straightforward tasks, such as lifting boxes and assisting on assembly lines, in roles where human workers are scarce. Despite the advancements, Todorova noted that there is still significant progress to be made. "We are on the verge of a significant transformation, just beginning to explore the capabilities of humanoid robots. As technology evolves and models improve, we expect these robots to be utilized in service-oriented sectors, unlocking vast economic growth, particularly in Western markets." Barclays’ report outlines two phases for the deployment of humanoid robots. The first phase is currently underway and is anticipated to continue until 2030, focusing on industries like manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and construction. The second phase, set to begin post-2030, will see these robots integrated into healthcare, elder care, education, and hospitality sectors. Additionally, the report reveals that China is leading the global robotics revolution, accounting for nearly half of all industrial robots installed worldwide—approximately 300,000 compared to 34,000 in the United States. The report highlights China's dominance in both the production and deployment of humanoid robots, which are manufactured at about half the cost of their Western counterparts. Jason Pidcock, who oversees a £2.75 billion Asian Income fund at Jupiter Asset Management, shared a bold vision for the future: "In ten years, humanoid robots will be ubiquitous. You'll likely have one in your home, and many of your friends or family will own one too. They will be prevalent in factories and government sectors." Pidcock also pointed out that the introduction of these robots will significantly enhance productivity, emphasizing the necessity for both hardware and software innovations in their production. He sees Asia leading the charge in this technological evolution. Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, echoed the sentiment that humanoid robots could emerge as one of the most significant market opportunities in the AI sector. He described this development as a 'golden goose' for physical AI, aligning with Tesla's ambitious vision for Optimus. While Ives noted that key players in humanoid robotics remain private, he acknowledged China's current leadership in this field, suggesting that the U.S. still has room to catch up. He predicts the market will grow into the trillions over the next decade, transforming both consumer and business operations while also highlighting the need for careful risk management in the industry.
