The quest to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into humanoid robots is a significant hurdle for the industry, according to Wang Xingxing, the CEO of Hangzhou Unitree Technology Co Ltd, one of China's leading robotics firms. Speaking at the World Robots Conference in Beijing, Wang asserted that the necessary expertise could be achieved within the next one to three years. He compared the current state of the sector to the 2022 breakthrough of ChatGPT, which brought AI into the limelight and made it widely recognized. Wang noted, "We are at a pivotal moment, perhaps one to three years away from the emergence of technology similar to ChatGPT." He emphasized that while the industry has identified the necessary direction for development, tangible advancements have yet to be realized. His insights come amid heightened competition among Chinese robotics companies striving to produce affordable humanoid robots, despite uncertainties regarding practical applications. Currently, Chinese firms are testing human-shaped robots in factories for tasks such as sorting materials and conducting quality assessments. However, Wang pointed out that a significant barrier to large-scale deployment is the absence of robust AI models tailored for humanoid robots. Unitree is capitalizing on the growing excitement among investors and consumers regarding China's capabilities in this emerging field, even though a clear frontrunner has yet to emerge. The company recently introduced its R1 robot with a price tag of 39,900 yuan (approximately $5,900), although mass production has not yet commenced. Additionally, Shenzhen-based Engine AI is poised to launch a robot priced at 38,500 yuan soon. Despite the challenges, Chinese humanoid robots have made headlines by participating in events like half-marathons and kick-boxing tournaments. However, these feats have not been without their mishaps, as many robots struggled to complete the races. Nonetheless, such endeavors reflect China's ambition to compete with and potentially surpass the United States in advanced technological sectors. Unitree's visibility surged after its humanoid robots were showcased during this year's nationally televised Spring Festival gala. Recently, the company released an impressive video featuring a mechanical dog adeptly climbing slopes, spinning on one leg, and maneuvering over rocky terrain, which has significantly boosted the stock prices of Chinese robotics companies.
